"Big Yawn"

Oil on museum quality ampersand gessobord panel 5" x 7"

My wife isn't the only one who objects to the ghoulish nocturnal creative hours I keep. J.J. plainly feels that my time would be much better spent in bed, with the electric blanket on high and him under my arm under the covers. Clever cat that he is, I may adopt his suggestion in short order. Just when I got use to spring, winter has come back to Baltimore and there is a real chill in the air tonight. I'm sure I will miss this weather during the dog days of summer but now - not so much. It could be that J.J. is merely bored with my artistic pursuits. Hopefully he will perk up when he sees himself starring in the blog tomorrow.

This is so great! I just love this.
Makes my jaw drop... but I am not yawning when looking at this. I like those teeth and the way his tongue is curled up... and that paw is so cute!!! His eyes and ears OOHHHHH such a handsome cat.

Thanks, Todd. Congratulations on your upcoming show. I did a series of paintings called "Confetti", based on contemporary American fashion, back in the late 80's. All the canvases were 40" x 60" so I can appreciate the "Gonna need a bigger boat" piece you are working on.

Thanks, Christy. Yawning is contagious. I had a hard time staying awake while I was painting this piece.

btw - Thanks for the little bonus giclee' print. I'm thrilled to have my first (and 2nd) ACEO.

Mark, your ability to render the photo realistic is uncanny! Again I shake my head in disbelief. One day I'd love to see a tutorial on how you get your colors so accurate or anything about your process. :)

Thanks, Jeff. Many years ago I posed a similar question to an amazing local portrait painter, Larry Wheeler, and he said - "I squint a lot." The perception of color and the ability to blend pigments is a craft I picked up long ago. I do use Jack Richeson's "Grey Matters Paper Palette" pads to mix my paint which I think helps to see true colors.

btw - I think your color sense is wonderful.
